TS: The Illusion of Thought and the Teachings of Eckhart Tolle, a Teleseminar with Michael Jeffreys (10-6-09)

How often do your thought & mental stories prevent you from taking action? Does incessant thinking create anxiety & prevent you from enjoying the present moment? Does the smoke screen of your thoughts prevent you from knowing your true yourself? All this and more on the recording of our October 6th Teleseminar.

On page 21 of A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle points to a key transformation central to all of his teachings:

“…at the heart of the new consciousness lies the transcendence of thought, the newfound ability of rising above thought, of realizing a dimension within yourself that is infinitely more vast than thought. You then no longer derive your identity, your sense of who you are, from the incessant stream of thinking that in the old consciousness you take to be yourself.”

In fact, on page 22, he goes on to explain why it is essential that we collectively learn to transcend thought, and what happens when we don’t:

“…complete identification with form -physical forms, thought forms, emotional forms… results in a total unawareness of my connectedness with the whole, my instrinsic oneness with every “other” as well as with the Source. This forgetfulness is original sin, delusion, suffering. When this delusion of utter separateness underlies and governs whatever I think, say, and do, what kind of world do I create? To find out the answer to this, observe how humans relate to each other, read a history book, or watch the news on television tonight.”

Read this selection again carefully.

When we forget our connectedness, our oneness with everyone, and with life itself, what happens?

Complete identification with our thoughts is one way to forget this oneness, one path to suffering. Identifying with incessant thought is forgetting the vastness of all that lies beyond thought: a vast interconnected Being-ness that is peacecully all-inclusive. Ultimately, it is Love.

On our October 6th teleseminar, we were joined by Michael Jeffreys,  organizer of the Santa Monica Eckhart Tolle Meetup and author of “Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars.”

In a lively conversation, we explore how incessant thinking prevents us from taking action, prevent us from enjoying the present moment, and, ultimately, hide our recognition of our oneness with Life.

We also discuss strategies for breaking through the illusion of thought, dismantling illusions of form, and experiencing the peace and beauty of being One with Life.

  2. Hi Leo, Greg and Michael,

Thank you very much for this Teleseminar, and thank you for all your great work.

With regards to the story of Michael’s sister; her tenants not paying the rent on time; I feel that it is also important to look at what she could do if she had not received the rent on time. I would like to say that surrender and to take a few deep conscious breaths would be useful in this scenario, so as to stop the mind in its negative tracks and subsequently calm the mind down, and to step out of its negative habitual pattern. There can then be a more effective focus on the problem which is a more calm and methodical response to the problem which prevents polluting the body and the enviornment with negative and anxious, toxic emotions. After all, the anxiety and the negativity and the worry will not solve the problem, it will only make it worse.

I would also like to say that for some people to transcend above thought and the mind, it may be necessary for them to identify and release the pain body. As a heavy pain body would also be an obstacle in transcendence of thought and the mind.

    Many thanks,
    Martin
