Key Insights From This Call
Maggie Wilkins is the founder of One-Heart Teachings and facilitator of Eckhart Tolle-based groups since 2002. Maggie was blessed with an opportunity to work closely with Eckhart Tolle in the early 2000’s, before the Power of Now was published by Namaste Publishing. She shares her experiences working and nurturing Eckhart early in his career.
Maggie shares her observations about today’s culture of speed and over-achievement. Based on her personal life and on experiences shared by clients, she notes that in this age of speed and complexity, there is an ever growing need for stillness and simplicity.
Maggie shares how she’s used Eckhart Tolle’s teachings to develop a very simple mantra that helps her find the simplicity and stillness in her life.
She repeatedly asks a very simple question:
What is most important in this moment right now?
Is it most important to run my child to soccer so I can run more errands, etc?
Or is it more important to make time to cook together, sit down and talk about day, have friends over for dinner…
What is most important right now? What is required now?
Some things we do in our daily routines may have looked important at some point, but they may now be damaging.
A conscious shift within, one towards stillness, simplicity, closeness, and presence, will gradually manifest a shift on the outside, including new connections, new priorities, new closeness, less anxiety, more stillness and inner peace.
Ask yourself: What is required now?
Focusing on your inner body awareness, through your breath, can also help you assess your life each moment around this question.
As you evolve into an inner awareness, you may realize that certain patterns may not be needed any more.
Ask yourself: What are some patterns that are emerging within me, the new consciousness emerging through each of us… are those old routines, habits, still required… is this required? If not, then allow it to shed, so you can be space for this new consciousness to emerge through you.
As you ask yourself What is required now?, you will become conscious of your life. You will become aware of where your pains are and aware of what’s causing the physical and emotional pains in your life. This awareness is the first step to growing in presence power, creating the space for a grand shift in your life. As you ask yourself again: “What is required now?” consider this: Do I really need to continue on with this? Why am I saying yes to this still? Allow and give space to changes that are happening.
Be aware that as you start moving into an inner shift towards what is required in your life, as you shed old restrictive habits, this can create some space in our lives. It’s ok to have empty space in our lives… there will be a tendency to fill that space with things to do… but having space is OK. This may be uncomfortable! (That’s the ego not content with the present moment. The conditioned self.)
Allow the molecules around you to just be with you.
It’s ok to be.
Moving back to the stillness from the hectic speed of our modern lives, we can tap into that Being essence that is infinite. From that place only can we get the true movement that is naturally required of us.
It’s not about trying to make your life better…that is moving into another form of doing. Instead it’s about being attuned to our inner natural movement towards stillness, towards a shift that creates space for inner consciousness to arise.
As you experience that moment of no thought… notice that simple existence happening in that space.
In A New Earth (Page 245), Eckhart Tolle explains a spiritual practice that epitomizes simplicity:
“One conscious breath… taken many times per day, is an excellent way of bringing space into your life. Even if you meditated on your breath for two hours or more, which some people do, one breath is all you ever need to be aware of, indeed ever can be aware of.”
